Grade 9 Student Expectations + Assessment
Band instruction occurs six times per cycle for students choosing to take band as an elective in Grade 9. Students receive a credit for band if they successfully complete the course at the end of the year. Students also have the option of attending Junior Symphonic rehearsals at the Comp to earn an additional Grade 9 credit. Grade 9 students are part of the Grade 8/9 Concert Band which performs at the Remembrance Day assembly in November and travels out of province in the spring to perform at a music festival.
In Grade 9 band, instruction is focused on the following areas:
> Reinforcing proper playing and practice habits with a greater focus on tone production, technique, tuning, balance and blend, and musicality.
> Further teaching of more advanced playing concepts and fundamentals of music.
> Advanced skill and technical development.
> Detailed rehearsals for the purpose of performance in class, at 2 band concerts (December + June), and on an out of province band trip in the spring.
> Sight-reading various styles of music at a higher level.
> Teacher-led tasks at the beginning of the year with a shift toward student-led tasks by the end of the year (emphasis on the student as a young musician).
> Skill and technical performance tests covering playing techniques and more challenging musical concepts.
> Projects developed to enhance student learning, encouraging students to become more independent, higher level thinkers: major scales playing tests, key signatures/circle of fifths, tuning, minor scale construction, independent study project, composition basics/music technology, end of the year solo performance assessment.
Report Card Assessment in Band
Students in Grade 9 are assessed in four main areas in music:
1. Making - developing language and practices for making music.
2. Creating - generating, developing, and communicating ideas for creating music.
3. Connecting - developing understanding about the significance of music by making connections to various times, places, social groups, and cultures.
4. Responding - using critical reflection to inform musical learning, and developing identity.
This is an elective class for high school credit. Students must complete all tasks and performances to receive their credit.
> Students are assessed on a regular basis throughout the year based on individual skill growth and understanding. If students practice on a regular basis at home, they will be successful. Practice efforts are evident in a student’s playing. If a student chooses not to practice or is unprepared for class or assessments, their personal skill evaluation will be reflective of this.
> Band is a participation-based subject and students need to rely on their own skills to perform their parts. No one else can learn your part!
> Students need to participate regularly, try their best, be prepared, practice at home and set goals in order receive a “4” or a mark of 95-100%.
> Students can redo an assessment as many times as they wish to practice and try to improve their mark.
