ESMS Band Goals
> Participating in musical experiences which will help enhance students’ overall educational experiences.
> To develop higher level skills for students wishing to continue with band in high school and beyond.
> To help students develop a life-long appreciation for music.
> To instill a sense of discipline, responsibility and commitment – a band depends on everyone to be successful.
Band class is a co-curricular activity. The required work for band class includes both “in class” and “out of class” activities. All band students will be evaluated and assessed on their work and practice completed both in school and out of school.
Band concerts cover all of the major report card outcomes for ESMS band students – concerts are like exams in band (but are way more fun!). Attendance is required and necessary for all students for both concerts (December and June). Band is demanding, involving, and rewarding. It requires a great amount of personal commitment, dedication and effort to reach the common goal of performance throughout the year at all levels. In band, we are all on the same team and our concerts are like the final game in the series. If even one or two students are missing at a concert, our bands do not sound as good as they could with everyone there. Don't let your classmates down!
Learning an instrument is a skill that requires discipline, motivation, creative thinking and teamwork. Skills such as such as teamwork, responsibility, self-confidence, communication, multi-tasking, and creativity are reinforced in band class. These are important life skills that employers often look for when you apply for a job.
As long as students put forth a strong effort to reach these goals, they will achieve a high level of personal success and growth, which is ultimately the goal of all of our ensembles. The harder you work, the more successful you will be.
Student responsibilities include:
> Regular at-home review of material learned in class for as long as it takes to be confident and sure of their parts.
> Completion of all in-class and out-of-class assignments.
> Bringing all the required supplies to every class: band book, music, pencil, instrument, extra reeds, valve oil/slide cream, etc.
> Writing down playing assessment dates and upcoming events.
> Following the ESMS Code of Conduct and band room expectations.
> Coming to class willing to contribute and work cooperatively as part of a group.
> Attending both annual band concerts and any extra performances for the benefit of the student and the entire band.
