ESMS is one of the few schools in the province that starts band in Grade 5. All students take band in Grade 5 and 6 and it becomes an elective in Grade 7/8/9. Students in our school have the opportunity to take band for 5 years and into high school and beyond if they choose to continue.
Learning an instrument benefits the whole student - it is a physical activity, a mental workout, math, history, decoding, and fosters creativity. It helps students develop important life skills such as teamwork, cooperation, time management, goal setting, patience, self-confidence, multi-tasking, and responsibility. Making music can also help ease anxiety and increase overall wellness. Students choose from FLUTE, CLARINET, TRUMPET, TROMBONE with a few spots open for EUPHONIUM and TUBA. There are tryouts at the end of Grade 6 for alto and tenor saxophone and percussion. Otherwise students play the same instrument for all of their time in band. |
